Who Are You Calling a Hypocrite?

Rush Limbaugh attack on first lady’s weight would be laughable, if it weren’t the latest in a string of personal attacks on Michelle Obama by conservatives.

Rush Limbaugh's recent attack on First Lady Michelle Obama’s weight would be laughable if it weren’t the latest in a string of personal attacks on her by conservatives.

Rush Limbaugh called the first lady fat on Monday. That’s right, the woman who has guns of steel and promotes healthy eating and a more active lifestyle to combat obesity is an oinker, according to the conservative commentator. Only in Limbaugh’s bizarro world is she fat because she ate high-calorie pork ribs:
"The problem is—and dare I say this—it doesn't look like Michelle Obama follows her own nutritionary, dietary advice. And then we hear that she's out eating ribs at 1,500 calories a serving with 141 grams of fat per serving."

My initial reaction is, people living in glass houses…

Limbaugh says that Obama—who promotes the highly criticized (and highly praised) healthy-living Let's Move campaign—should be leading by example and not eating high-fat, high-calorie foods. But, what Limbaugh overlooks is that the key to any healthy diet is moderation. If she were eating ribs every night, well, she might resemble Limbaugh in her girth. But she’s not, so she doesn’t.

Then he attacks her for not looking like a Sports Illustrated swimsuit model. Really? That’s just petty. (As is the cartoon of a fat Michelle Obama telling the president to “Shut up, and pass the bacon!”)

Rush, if you don’t like the Let’s Move campaign, then criticize the campaign, which has actually gotten retail giant Wal-Mart to start lowering the sodium and fat in some of its prepared foods. You are entitled to your opinion, but personal attacks are just below the belt and cheapen your argument.
