Kevin Hart Thanks Wanda Sykes For Helping Him Grow After Oscars Controversy

The Mark Twain prize-winning comedian called Sykes the “best light bulb ever” after his Oscars controversy.

Self-proclaimed rock star comedian Kevin Hart has been reflecting on his life and choices and is proud to have grown from his past mistakes. In 2018, Hart infamously stepped down as the host for The Oscars after refusing to apologize for his controversial opinions and jokes about homosexuality, which were resurfaced by the disappointed and hurt public. After his refused apology, Hart had an intervention with fellow comedian, Wanda Sykes, who clued him in on his offensive remarks.

During a “60 Minutes” interview with Anderson Cooper, the 44-year-old comedian credited Sykes for her instrumental role in his transformation. He referred to her as the 'best light bulb ever ', recalling her words, “‘There are people being hurt today because of comments like the ones you made then. And there are people who think it’s okay to make those comments today based on what you did then.’” Hart openly acknowledged the wisdom in Sykes’ words, demonstrating his acceptance of his past mistakes. He shared, “In those moments of despair, great understanding and education can come out of it, if you’re given the opportunity.” This acceptance is a testament to his growth and maturity.

Comedians are often under fire, standing too close to the sun with some of their more tongue-in-cheek jokes. Times have changed and many comedians cannot change with those times. Seeing Hart learn from his mistakes and move forward with education and compassion is inspiring. It’s good to see the comedian have this “come-to-Jesus” moment.
